Are the Petticrew DNA project and the Pettigrew DNA project separate, or are participants in one also automatically participants in the other?

In answer to your question, their separate. If the individual has chosen in their preferences for matching, they will see matches in Petticrew, Pettigrew and any other surname on FamilyTree DNA database.
Below is a copy from FamilyTree DNA preference:
Please choose your preference for matching purposes:
I want to restrict the display of matches only to my Surname Project
I want my matches to be set against the entire database.
