Article by Richard Pettigrew, Alexandria, Virginia

I wish to emphasize that there were two groups of Pettigrew's in Northern Ireland in the early days of the Ulster Plantation. The French Huguenots from France, who mostly wove linen, arrived in the 1600’s. This group would include the Abbeville line [South Carolina] and probably some of the NC [North Carolina] line. The Scottish line, on the other hand, had probably been in Great Britain since the 1200's and therefore had much time for DNA mutation. I believe I had seen some DNA signatures, such as Abner's, to indicate that a few of the N.C. Pettigrew's were actually of the old Scottish line as opposed to the French Huguenot line. Therefore, the time difference between the arrival of the lines would very much affect your [Pettigrew DNA Project] DNA program.

My name is Robert James PETTIGREW of Australia. b4 July 1945 Carlton, Victoria, Australia. I am related to the PETTIGREW 's in USA.

I had my DNA done in December 2009. I have been trying to join the Clifton PETTIGREW, PETTIGREW DNA Project to no avail. When I go to log in the Pettigrew name it takes me back to the DNA home page. Can you help me to join PETTIGREW DNA Project?

Bette,

I am thinking of getting my DNA tested. My name is Robert Waddell Pettigrew III. I have a family tree of the Waddells dating back to the 1700's. I know nothing of my Pettigrew heritage. I don't know if we are from the descendants of the Pennsylvania region or North Carolina. I do believe my great grandfather was the first or second generation natural born American in my lineage. On the Waddell side, my great great grandfather was an Irish immigrant who came to Mississippi from North Carolina. His daughter married my great grandfather. We inherited some three hundred acres of land through my great grandmother's sister. It leads me to believe they immigrated with some wealth and according to the family tree, the Waddells were mostly lawyers, judges, and other prestigious career holders. According to my dad, which I never know if his family stories are folk tales of truth, my great grandfather Pettigrew spent the family wealth trying to cure my great aunt's sickness, which most likely MS. She actually attended The Mississippi University for Women in the 30's and early 40's before becoming ill. My family financial situation is quite poor at the moment, but I can't help to I come great achievers. I'm not looking to find that rich dead uncle; I just want know my pride in my name and the abilities it brings me is validated. I can put pictures of my great grandfather, my grandfather, dad and myself amongst each other and we all look the same. It's like the Pettigrew Y gene is super dominant no matter the variation in the mothers. Granted, on my fathers side through all the different maternal genetic variations, we are very much strictly what most Americans refer to as Scot-Irish. I can't speak for my mother's genealogy because they don't seem to know much or want to share it (they are Mormon😏) but I can say the surname is Brady which points to O'Brady. My uncle on her side has red in his beard and resembles your typical Irish descendent. As for myself, I believe myself to be most closely expressing the Scottish-Frankish descent. I am of average height 5'10" and have an ability to put on strength and muscle with almost minimal effort. My hair is brown but almost resembles an auburn color women dye their hair to achieve. After my ears, my hair curls like that of Michelangelo's David. I have red, brown, and black in my beard. I often wonder about the Neanderthal gene as well. Do you guys think I should do it? Would it even answer these questions? I look at Pettigrews all over the U.S. On Facebook and it just seem to be the same lineage. Maybe some jumbling of the maternal X or what not, but I think I'm of the rare Pettigrew bloodline from the France area that went to the isles during the Frankish period.
